Talking to Hugo Drechsel, one the three sons of Komet Irrigation’s founder, has an open and deeply relational style, with a frank authenticity that underpins the company’s philosophy. “The market will follow when you deliver value,” he says, reflecting on the guiding principle instilled by his father. This ethos of uncompromising rigor tempered with human warmth has defined Komet’s DNA and frames its next chapter, led by managing directors CEO Andree Groos and COO Sacha Hoffmann.
A Family Legacy Forged in Water
Komet’s story begins in the German-speaking region of northern Italy, where Hugo’s grandmother, affectionately known as “Advocat” for her formidable business acumen, imported agricultural machinery from Scandinavia. “She was tough, decisive, and unstoppable,” Hugo laughs. “And she kicked my father out of the house when he decided to start his own business rather than follow her path.”
That independent streak birthed Komet. Initially installing full irrigation systems, Hugo’s father soon specialized in sprinklers, a decision that would set the stage for the company’s future leadership in mechanized irrigation. “Once you touch water, you never let go,” he was told early on. Hugo explains, “Farmers are humble, grounded, and their lives move in cycles. That stability shaped our approach and ethics.”
By the time Hugo and his siblings, Arno and Viktor, were born, Komet was around a decade old and firmly established. Hugo recalls the lessons from growing up in a family business: Sunday lunches were saturated with discussions about production, clients, and technical challenges. “When we went to university, our choice was… well, we had no choice really,” he says, smiling. Yet the exposure instilled resilience, intuition, and a deep understanding of the agricultural sector that could not be learned in a classroom.
Engineering DNA: Trust, Detail, and Innovation
Komet’s culture is built on its father’s old-school principles: straight-talking business, handshake agreements, and an unwavering commitment to follow through. Hugo recalls, “He only committed to what he could deliver. People respected him. Competitors knew they could test him, but he never failed.”
This ethic of excellence carried over into the company’s factories. The production facility moved from Italy to Austria, that completed in 2000, was deliberate and methodical. Hugo remembers, “We waited for long-serving employees to retire before transitioning. The Austria factory reflects how our father taught us to work: do a job properly, invest in quality, and perfection will follow.” His father’s Bauhaus influenced attention to detail, where each aspect is purpose built, extended to environmental considerations, pioneering a mindset that made sustainability implicit in Komet’s operations long before it became a global imperative.
Innovation, Hugo emphasizes, has always been central. “We were hunters, not hunted,” he says. A defining moment was the development of Komet’s pivot sprinklers, a market dominated for decades by just two players. The brothers invested ten years of relentless development. “No one believed in us at first,” Hugo recalls. “But we proved that dedication and engineering excellence win respect.” Today, the pivot sprinkler portfolio commands a significant global market share, a testament to the company’s willingness to tackle the technically difficult and commercially ambitious.
Succession and Strategic Partnerships
Navigating the second-generation transition was no small feat. Hugo and his brothers faced pivotal decisions around investment, market expansion, and leadership. The eventual sale to the Swedish private equity firm Trill Impact was approached with care. Hugo explains, “We wanted our team, our employees, and Komet’s culture to have a future beyond us. Handing over responsibility felt like waking up to a new reality. One day you carry everything: the next, it’s clean sheet. For exciting new adventures…”
This handover set the stage for managing director team CEO Andree Groos and COO Sacha Hoffmann, to steer the company through its ambitious five-year plan to double revenue.
Scaling with Purpose
Andree was struck by Komet’s exacting standards and global reach. “There was no compromise, whether on quality, detail, or process,” he says. “For a company from a small town in the Alps, delivering worldwide excellence is remarkable.”
His growth strategy is built on three pillars: market penetration, operational excellence, and new product solutions. Existing relationships with farmers are deepened through consistent engagement and technical support. Capacity and automation are scaled to match global demand, while digital and data-driven solutions, such as irrigation sensors, remote diagnostics, and field surveillance, will expand Komet’s product ecosystem. “Innovation is normal for Komet,” Andree shares. “We do more than half of our revenue with products we didn’t have 10-years ago.”
Macro forces, climate volatility, water scarcity, and shifting supply chains, inform every strategic decision. Komet positions itself as part of the solution, helping farmers produce more with less. “We are intrinsically a sustainability-focused company,” Hugo adds. “Our products save water, reduce energy use, and contribute to feeding the world.”
Balancing Culture and Growth
Maintaining Komet’s culture amid commercial scaling is a core priority. Andree emphasizes speed, pragmatism, attention to detail, and zero compromise as cultural traits to protect. At the same time, transparency, structured decision-making, and data-driven processes are introduced to underpin global growth.
Hugo and his brothers are confident that their legacy, hands-on engagement with farmers, a commitment to teaching and knowledge transfer, and relentless pursuit of quality remain central. “Our goal was always teaching first, sales second. The market will follow when you deliver value,” Hugo reflects.
Looking to the Future
As Komet enters its next chapter, the ethos of its founders remains visible in every decision. Andree frames it succinctly: “Komet has always reinvented itself. We care about our customers and will grow with them. Our vision: to be the leader in precision irrigation components and solutions for sustainable, profitable growth.”
From a small family business in the Alps to a global force in irrigation, Komet exemplifies how grit, ingenuity, and human-centered leadership can propel both innovation and sustainability. The company is poised for meteoric growth, but its grounding in engineering excellence, ethical practices, and farmer-centric ethos ensures that this trajectory is not just ambitious, it is enduring.
